Meaning behind Angelina Jolie's name and her kids's name

Jolie came from French word, which means "pretty". Angelina Jolie's original name was Angelina Jolie Voight. She legally remove her surname, Voight. Voight is her father's surname. Thus, Jolie became her surname.


Jolie's father left her mother when Jolie was only less than a year old. They didn't speak for years. Three years after Jolie's mother death, they reconcilled.

Below are the meaning behind her six kids's name:

1. Shiloh Jolie-Pitt

   Jolie explained, "It was a name my parents almost named their first child — there was a miscarriage: Shiloh Baptist".

2. Maddox Jolie-Pitt

    Maddox means "good fortune" and originally from Welsh. 

3. Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt

   Zahara means "to shine" and originally from Swahili.

4. Pax Jolie-Pit

    Pax Thien means "peaceful sky." Pax is originally from Latin word while Thien is originally from Vietnamese word

5. Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt

    Vivienne came from the word Vivian, in French, means "life, alive". Marcheline is from Angelina Jolie's late mother name. 

6. Knox Léon Jolie-Pitt

    Knox came from the middle name of Brad’s grandfather, Hal Knox Hillhouse. Léon is taken from the name of Angelina’s great-great grandfather.
