During an interview with People, Alessandro Baricco’s 2002 novella was part of Angelina Jolie's private healing process.
Jolie shares, "I had been given this book by somebody a decade ago. I went through a difficult time in my life and this was one of the only things that I had in my luggage, was this book."
"I penned the screenplay just to kind of sit with it, be with it and never really thought the film would get made. I didn’t do it to ever share it."

Angelina Jolie interviewed Salma Hayek for The Cut magazine, where Salma shared that she felt “so free” as an actress working under Jolie’s direction.
Salma shared, "I don’t think I could have done it with anyone else. I’ve never felt so free in my life as an actress. You gave me everything I ever needed. I was spoiled by the process. My co-star, Demián Bichir, felt the same way. This was also the first time that I was given the choice of the actor I played opposite — the first time I was involved or consulted or asked about it. And I didn’t even ask for it."
Jolie responded, "That’s crazy considering your career and your life. Also, it’s not about having the power to be consulted; it’s that when things are so intimate, it’s really important that the actors have at least a say as to why they might connect to someone else."
During an interview with L'Officiel on Wednesday, September 9, Angelina Jolie was asked whether she could see herself relocating to New York instead of Los Angeles in the future.
Jolie replied, "Out of the States more, I think. I don't really plan to have a base. I'd like to have a home base for my family, a place where some of the mom stuff and the family photos are. And then I'd like to be a bit nomadic for a while."

During an interview with L’Officiel, Angelina Jolie was asked whether she hopes to launch any other projects or events at future Atelier.
Jolie tells, "I’ll be most excited when I see these regular residencies from around the world. A misconception about the Atelier is that it’s this private space. There are things within it that are private, but the absolute majority is completely open to the public."
"All the classes, the dinner series, some of the talks, the gallery. I’m looking forward to seeing more people using it. And because it’s a collective, it really is as much as people make it. I think today, the average person can tell when something is created by a brand. It takes a little longer and it’s harder, but when you build something organically with real friends and real artists and invite people to participate as a community, it’s more authentic and a little bold. It’s unknown and is a chance to help others do business and share their craft. That’s what’s exciting."
