The movie is based on true story and was written by Elizabeth Becker, book title, "When the War Was Over: Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge Revolution".
This 1978 book contains a trip to Democratic Kampuchea, accompanied by journalist Richard Dudman and academic Malcolm Caldwell.
