Lydia Cacho shared a heartfelt conversation with Angelina Jolie. She tells, "I remember listening to powerful and amazing Angelina, so sweet and caring and thinking to myself: I really hope it’s bulletproof because the powerful pedophil*s really want to kill me and destroy my credibility."
"That night she told me I should make a movie about the entire experience of facing powerful child exploitation mafias. I guess I will… I answered, and she hugged me. Sometimes you find strength and friendship in the most unexpected places. Sometimes you get to meet magical people."
Angelina Jolie paid tribute to Mexican journalist and activist Lydia Cacho at the 18th Annual Courage in Journalism Awards in October 2007, acknowledging her efforts to expose child exploitation. Jolie was present at the ceremony in support of Cacho, who was honored with the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) award for her investigative reporting on influential child pornography networks in Mexico.
During Jolie's tribute to Lydia, she tells, "It’s an honor to award Lydia Cacho with the IWMF prize for Courage in journalism. She is a star that shines to bring light in times of darkness for all women and children. Her integrity is bulletproof".
